A visit to the now disused gold mine in Rodalquilar was amazing and also somewhat sad. History tells us that the mine on the edge of this small visit began working in 1884 and changed this small village forever. The money that the gold mine provided built homes for the miners and their families, the local church and other facilities.
In the mid 1950s it was said to be one of the largest gold mines in Western Europe and at this time the village was home to more than 1400 inhabitants. The mine finally closed in 1990 and now is abandoned as are the homes of the original miners on the outskirts of the village. The population today is just 100 some of whom have wonderful stories of the old days to share. The village now caters for the tourists with its bohemian atmosphere it is certainly worth a visit you might even find some gold.
