Another tradition that we love in Spain is the Belens. Every year individual homes, shops, businesses, churches and town halls create these wonderful nativity scenes. It reminds us of what Christmas should be about. The Belens can be large of small but always include Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus along with some shepherds and of course the three Kings on their camels bearing gifts. The Belens also depict life in these times with cows, sheep, donkeys and chickens, fruit stalls, vegetable carts, bread ovens, water mills in fact more than you could imagine. The Belens are passed down through the families and tradition is that you should add at least one new figure or piece per year. Belen markets take place all over Spain from December through to the beginning of January.
